Sailors For The Sea Sails the Sustainable J/88

J/88 Electra sailing off Newport (Newport, RI)- “The electric J/88 leads the way to 21st Century Solar Sailing,” says Max Williamson, a Sailors for the Sea Board member.  Max continues his commentary and perspective on sailing the J/88 ELECTRA, “The wind is solar-powered.  Quite literally, wind is convection currents created by sun heating the earth.  Now 21st century solar technology allows sailors to harness the sun, as well as the wind, to move us through the ocean."

"J-Boat’s sleek J/88 day sailor is a leading example of a growing trend in integrating alternative energy technology into boatbuilding.  We recently had the pleasure of test-driving the J/88 in Miami," comments Max.  Here are his perspectives below:

Oceanvolt Electric Drive
"Imagine having a quiet conservation on board when powering to the marina after a relaxing day sail, instead of revving up the internal combustion engine.  Imagine no more choking on diesel exhaust going downwind, no more gasoline fumes in the bilge, no more fuel dock runs.  The J-88’s solar package, built around an Oceanvolt SD6 6kW 48vdc propulsion system and UK Sailmakers SolarClothSystem® solar panels on the mainsail and bimini, opened our eyes to those possibilities.  With these innovations, fossil fuel propulsion may soon be a relic for "classic boat" aficionados.

The Oceanvolt drive is indeed quiet.  While not Hunt for Red October silent, the electric drive is a huge improvement over the diesel experience.  When motoring at five knots we actually had to ask whether the electric drive was on.  Down below one can hear the drive humming when engaged, and there is of course the mechanical churning of the prop thru the water, but the contrast with diesel systems was striking.  With some sound proofing around the engine compartment, the sound might be reduced to nil.  Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the electric drive was the brawny torque and “bite” on the water on acceleration or going into reverse.  The electric drive ramps seamlessly from a standstill to full power like a Tesla Model S, much more smoothly than a mechanical drive system.

Minimizing our Environmental Impact
Sailing is already relatively clean, but the solar sailing package reduces our remaining environmental footprint dramatically.  No “stinkpot” fumes will get in the way of enjoying nature, no fuel spills, and no greenhouse gases to worsen climate change and ocean acidification.

J/88 OceanvoltSolar and Hydro Charging
The electric drive is powered by an integrated system of Valence U24 lithium phosphate batteries and a 600W solar panel array.  The solar panels are laminated right into the mylar sailcloth in the mainsail, which charges while sailing, and bimini for charging at anchor or dockside.  In the J-88 configuration that we tested, the mainsail had 9 solar panels on each side, and the bimini has a zip-in 6-panel array.  The thin-film solar panels are as flexible as the sail itself, shape smoothly when hoisted and flake easily over the boom.  The panels can be placed in the lower third of the main for racing configuration, or in the mid-third for a cruising main to allow for reefing while keeping the panels in the sun.  Thin wires run down the luff along the mast into battery bank, similar to wiring from wind instrumentation.

Of course, the battery system can also be charged conventionally with shore power as well with a 5-6 hour recharge time from empty.  Apart from the solar charging, the electric drive can actually power itself – it you have enough wind to cruise at 6-7 knots under sail, the prop will freewheel backwards to charge the batteries, serving as an actual underwater generator.

Practical Sailing
The challenge of solar-electric propulsion has been range.  But the new technology is a breakthrough.  On a full-charge there is enough battery power to motor up to 20nm with no sail or solar power support depending on wind and sea state.  In theory, on a sunny day, with the solar panels charging and 3-4 knots of wind for the sails, the J-88 can motor-sail at a cruising speed of 5 knots all day long!  And, even gas or diesel runs out eventually.  We motored in Miami for almost an hour and the battery charge dropped scantly from 93% charge to 86% with no solar charging.  In any event, most recreational sailing is coastal and easily within the electric drive’s range.  J-Boats and other manufacturers are also looking at adapting highly efficient and clean fuel cell technology (which generates electricity from propane or natural gas) for sailors who need blue water cruising range.

The electric propulsion system is fully integrated, with high-tech power draw monitoring and other data systems.

The solar sailing package, being innovative technology, does cost more than a conventional diesel engine, adding 10 to 15% to the purchase price for a full solar-sailing package.  But, the cost is coming down rapidly and, interestingly, there are savings that one would not think of at first, such as not needing a muffler or fossil-fuel storage system.

The J/88 itself is a sporty day sailor with a nice mix of ease-of-sailing and race-ready performance-- but others will write about that.  What gets Sailors for Sea excited is J-Boat's integration of several new cutting-edge products into a green and clean energy package.”  Thanks for the review from Max Williamson - a member on the Board of Directors of Sailors for the Sea.  For more J/88 Oceanvolt solar-sailor information

J/Sport Cruisers Oceanvolt Option For 2017

Oceanvolt electric system option on JBoats (Newport, RI)- The Oceanvolt innovative, fully integrated SEA (Silent Electric Autonomy) system is currently offered on the USA built J/88.  And, starting this fall (2017 model year), it will also be offered on the J/95, J/97E, J/112E and J/122E.

Imagine sailing on a beautiful day knowing that, even if the wind dies and you’re forced to turn on the motor, peace and tranquility are not lost. Every minute sailing, the battery pack is being charged, allowing you to later silently power back to the harbor. “There is no quicker way to break the magic and silence of a beautiful day for sailors than having to turn on the diesel engine,” says Jeff Johnstone, President of J/Boats.

Oceanvolt electric motor systems are standard on more than 45 boat models, both monohull & multihull, represented by 30 different boat manufacturers worldwide. The systems are highly reliable, silent, maintenance free & create energy while sailing, even with folding propellers. The batteries of the propulsion system can be charged using the hydro-generation feature on the motors, solar power, shore power or a small DC generator. The generation feature creates hardly any drag, only 0-0.5 knots depending on the speed.

The Oceanvolt refit attachment flange has been designed for easy installations to fit directly onto existing sail drive beds of Yanmar and Volvo motors, so it is possible to install it into your existing J/Boats model as well. In addition to sail drive motors (up to 45hp), Oceanvolt also offers shaft drive models that are compatible to motors up to 25hp. Because the systems are 48V they are safe and can be installed without any special certification.

Contact salesusa@oceanvolt.com for more details about refitting. Learn more about the J/88 Oceanvolt model here- http://oceanvolt.com/jboats-j88. And, contact J/Boats to get more information about the different electric motor packages on the new J/Boats.

Electric J/88 SEAHORSE Feature!

J/88 electric boat- solar sails, hydro regen (Lymington, England)- French sailmaker Alain Janet is the founder of Solar Cloth System which has been busy developing a practical system for generating electrical power from thin photovoltaic films laminated onto modern sail fabrics…

In the past sailors have taken the ecological high ground over other boaters, yet modern sailing requires far more electrical power than it used to. With new onboard technologies and their growing demands for power, it’s clear that sailors now experience regular energy shortages while cruising and/or racing, even over relatively short distances. And of course, the problem grows exponentially when you are racing across oceans and around the world.

Sea and sun go hand in hand, so solar power has long seemed to offer an answer to this problem. However, rigid solar panels are heavy, bulky and require a lot of ingenuity to install discretely; but what about producing electricity with our sails?   See the article attached here- thanks to SEAHORSE magazine.

J/11S Yachting World Review

J/11S short-handed speedster- sailing Solent off Cowes, England (Cowes, England)- Matt Sheahan, Chief Technical Editor for Yachting World, commented that “…J/Boats, in general, have long had a reputation for being good to sail short-handed, thanks largely to the simplicity of the asymmetric spinnaker…the new J/11S has been tweaked to make her an easier boat to sail short-handed and more competitive.  As a result, she has twin rudders connected to a single tiller, a slightly shorter rig, and a smaller jib than her sistership she is based on- the J/111…. the changes and tweaks have helped bring her IRC handicap down from 1.096 (J/111) to 1.050 (J/11S), a reduction that gets her under the upper rating limit for the famous Trans Quadra Race, a popular TransAtlantic Race for single and double-handed amateur sailors over 40.”   Watch Matt’s J11S short-handed speedster sailing review here on YouTube.    Read more about Matt Sheehan’s perspectives on the new J/11S short-handed speedster here in his Yachting World article (PDF file).

SAIL Best Boats Winner- J/88 Oceanvolt!

J/88 Oceanvolt with solar power(Boston, MA)- Few builders are consistently willing to push the technology envelope and accept the risks that entails.  Remember 1991 and the world’s first sprit boat- the J/105?  This fall saw the introduction of the world’s ground-breaking Oceanvolt electric saildrive on the enormously innovative, all-electric J/88 from J/Boats.

TheJ/88 SAIL Best Boats winner Achilles heel of electric propulsion in boats is the high level of energy it takes to power at cruising speeds since large battery banks are required for any kind of substantial range.  However, the J/88 Oceanvolt model is impervious to this in as much as the propulsion system is needed only to maneuver in and out of slips, after which the boat is sailed.

The Valence batteries are lightweight lithium-ion manganese-phosphate (the world’s safest version of this leading edge technology). Although Oceanvolt saildrives have folding propellers, Oceanvolt has found an innovative way to use the folding propeller to stay open and freewheel when so desired, with the electric motor now being driven as a generator to recharge the batteries. The J/88 Oceanvolt also flies a SolarCloth main from UK Sailmakers, which includes a number of integrated solar panels to further top of its battery banks by generating electricity from the sun.  For more J/88 Oceanvolt SAIL Best Boats information

Explore The Newport Boat Show!

(Newport, RI)-  the Newport International Sail Boat show runs from September 17th to 20th at the Newport Yachting Center along the downtown waterfront.  The boats are located along the water in the center of the show.  Featured will be new J/97E, the new J/88 Oceanvolt, and the new J/122E.

J/122E cruiser racer sailboatThe J/122E Performance Cruiser
The J/122 is probably the most successful 40-foot IRC racer of her generation, with fully crewed regatta successes in Europe, America, the West Indies and Australia. Recently, 122s were the Overall winner of the 2014 Rolex Middle Sea Race and class winner of the 2014 Sevenstar RORC Round Britain & Ireland Race. She has also proven immensely popular with the single-handed and double-handed fraternity; an easily-driven hull and powerful yet manageable sailplan, allow the solo sailor to maintain race winning pace. Now, the J/122 has been given a new lease of life.

The J/122 Evolution benefits from a new interior and exterior design that is both refined and modern. These changes have been made in collaboration with the Roséo Design studio.

J/122E cruiser racer sailboat interior Didier Le Moal, of J/Composites in France, said, “The J/122 no longer needs an introduction. It’s a boat that has proven its worth in terms of fast cruising and boasts a series of fine race victories. Its seaworthiness remains unsurpassed, but it seemed important for us to adapt the J/122 to the current climate.  Together with the Roséo Design firm, we’ve given the J/122 a thorough re-design inside and out. Now, the interior has an uncluttered, clean Scandinavian-like design, giving a more luxurious feel, along with a revised bathroom and navigation station, and the exterior now features hull port lights. The J/122E is quite simply more modern and is sure to fulfill the needs of an ever more demanding clientele”.

The J/88 Oceanvolt DaysailorJ/88 electrifying the Solent- sailing fast!
This J/88 is the first “green”, eco-friendly boat produced by the J/Design team.  Building upon the extraordinary versatility of the standard J/88, the two most significant enhancements are the self-tacking, roller-furling jib that has just one line led aft for very easy short-handed sail trim and the electric power system.  The inboard power features Oceanvolt's innovative, fully integrated SEA electric motor system (Silent Electric Autonomy).  As a result, you have silent power on-demand getting into and out of the harbor.  And, extended passage-making is possible using a combination of (i) the novel SolarCloth System from UK Sailmakers France, (ii) an array of Sunbeam Sunpower solar cells; and (iii) the ability for the Oceanvolt motor to use the strut-drive propeller for hydro-electric power generation to supply the high-performance Valence Technology battery bank.  Controlling the entire system is Victron Energy’s Blue Sea charge controller that is a state of the art remote diagnostic and service interface that lets you check your boat's status from anywhere in the world over the Internet!

The J/97E Cruiser RacerJ/97E cruiser racer sailboat interior
Like its larger sistership, the J/122E, the new edition of the J/97 builds upon one of the most popular and successful offshore 32 footers on the European IRC circuit.  With the talented Roséo Design firm overlooking the transformation, the new J/97E features the enormous, comfortable J/111-style cockpit with a large 40” wheel for fingertip control.  Plus, the new interior design conveys the feeling of an extraordinarily wide, spacious living room with windows looking over the sea.

Ullman Sails Names Skip Novak As Sailing Ambassador!

Skip Novak- Chicago sailor extraordinaire! (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina)- Recently, a good friend from back in our Midwest days (e.g. as kids growing up sailing off Chicago and Wisconsin’s various lakes), was named to be the Ullman Sails “Sailing Ambassador”- his name is Skip Novak.  For starters, kudos to Skip and to Dave Ullman and friends at Ullman Sails for bringing Skip on board to help promote the experience of sailing worldwide and educate people on the importance of eco-friendly life-styles and environmentally-friendly programs.

Skip has sailed just about everywhere, starting with dinghies in Chicago, then a Chicago-Mac Race, then a Whitbread Race on the Swan 65 KINGS LEGEND (with a beloved, now long lost, friend- Greg Tuxworth), then some J/24 stuff here and there with friends, a few Cowes Race Weeks, now adventuring in a 70 foot schooner/ketch called PELAGIC II (funded by mostly Chicago sailing friends) and based out of Tierra del Fuego doing charters/ eco-adventures!  Read on! Skip is a great person and the ultimate sailing ambassador for anyone; plus he was recently honored with the prestigious Blue Water Medal by the Cruising Club of America for his many years of cruising and exploring the Antarctic.  Read more about Skip’s interview and background hereThanks for contribution from Ullman Sails/ Newport Beach.

J/40 HERON REACH Sailing Blue Planet Odyssey!

J/40 cruisers (Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands)- If some of you recall, Virginia and Jerry from Bellingham, Washington did an extensive refit on their J/40, called HERON REACH, set sail from San Diego to the Marquesas Islands to join the “Blue Planet Odyssey”. They recently made it to the Marquesas, here’s a recent excerpt from their blog:

“On Sunday, March 29th at 6:15pm, we morphed from Pollywogs into Shellbacks! In other words, we crossed the equator into the South Pacific!  We celebrated with a toast of gratitude to Neptune.  Not  surprisingly, it doesn't look any different out there, but we have a powerful sense of the accomplishment for crossing this imaginary line!  Tonight we saw the  Southern Cross  for the first time, the smallest of the 88 named constellations. It points to the south celestial pole and feels like a different world. But the next day, it was back to squalls coming on the horizon.

J/40 cruising Marquesas IslandsWe  have traveled 4,223 nautical miles since we left Bellingham, all on the largest body of water in the world.  The Pacific Ocean (North and South) cover more area than all of Earth's continents put together.  It is surrounded by the Ring of Fire, hundreds, if not thousands of both active and dormant volcanoes.  There are over 20,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean, most of which are concentrated in the south or west where we are headed.  Some of the islands are associated with their neighboring continent, like Japan, in the east, the Aleutians in the north, or Vancouver Island and the Gulf and San Juan Islands in our own backyard.  Another type is the high volcanic island such as the Hawaiian Islands or the Marquesas.  Finally, there are the sandy coral  atolls like the majority of the islands of the South Pacific.  It is this type most in danger by the rising seas of climate change.  It is astounding to us, as we cross this vast ocean, to realize that we have raised the temperature of such a gargantuan mass and changed its acidity level with our high carbon uses!”   Read more about their adventures here.

J/88 Sailing Perspectives- by Don Finkle

J/88 family daysailer/ weekender (Youngstown, New York)- “Why the J88?  Now that we have a couple of seasons of sailing and selling the 29 foot J88 we can answer this question with confidence.  An acknowledged perk of our business is the ability to sail the newest designs as they come out, not just once or twice, but over a season or more.  We have been able to do this for over 40 years, and the boats we like the most are the ones we hold onto the longest.  This will be our fourth year with the J70 and the third with the J88, which will tell you what we think of these boats.  There is much you can figure out by reading specs and studying equipment lists, such as the standard carbon fiber rig and retractable sprit, diesel saildrive, full race deck layout, a real marine head, etc.  What you can’t really tell is how the boat sails and handles, that is where we can fill in the blanks.

J/88 towed behind SUV truckJ/Boats has made themselves the preeminent performance boat company by focusing on what the majority of racers want.  Because they are racing sailors themselves and spend a great deal of time on the water and at regattas they know their customers.  They are not after the Grand Prix market, that is too small and there is very limited staying power there.  J/Boats are designed to be fast and agile enough to be fun and competitive with the vast majority of the boats out there but not tweaky and skittish or demanding of excellent crew to keep the mast pointed up and the keel pointed down.  The J88 is a perfect example of that, a fast boat that is fun to sail, easy to handle, and not over the top powered up.  Don’t get the idea that it is not quick enough however, for unless you are looking for the ultimate in speed you won’t be disappointed.  The 88 is well balanced on the helm, goes where you point it, is surprisingly close-winded and stable.  The various sail tests out there (one included below) will emphasize that the 88 is nimble yet has a bigger boat feel.  That is comforting when you are day-sailing, taking out friends and family, training new crew, or when the weather gets nasty.

J/88 sailing on Lake Ontario off New YorkThe 88 has become one of our all-time favorites because we can have so much fun with it.  It is a perfect size for those who don’t need to go cruising for any length of time.  The inboard engine, furling jib, marine head, real electrical system and seats in the forward cockpit make for convenience.  The retractable sprit and asymmetrical kits mean easier sailing with less demand for crew experience.  The deck and cockpit layout allow for comfortable places to sit.  The lack of midship toerails makes for much more comfortable hiking, as does the increased spacing between upper and lower lifelines.  The low deckhouse and small headsail overlap improve forward visibility upwind. We can be underway very quickly and putting the boat away after sailing is also simple.  This means more time having fun and less time for chores.  On the flip side all of the sail controls are there as standard equipment so you can have lots of fun fine-trimming to your heart’s content.

Yes, we love the J88 and make no apologies for that.  A good, solid, all-around performer designed by people who know what matters and built to last.  So please tell us what more one can ask for?

J/88s sailing CanAm regatta in New YorkAt least 6 J/88s racing out of Youngstown this summer:  We have one of, if not the, biggest local fleet in North America.  On any given race night, we could have six J/88’s on the starting line.  Whether we have our own start or not, there will be great one-design racing between the boats on Lake Ontario.  We found out last year that there were a lot of boats in our PHRF range that made for good competitive racing.  We were given a PHRF-LO rating of 87, but raced it at 81 because of the six second “protect the fleet” penalty.  That rating didn’t seem to hurt too much and still had good competition with the other Beneteau 36.7’s racing with a 78 rating, the J/109 at 80, Beneteau 10R at 92, NM Custom 30 at 93.  The J/88 is tough to beat if sailed to its potential.  We don’t know what the rating will be this year, but we are fine with any number between 81 and 87, knowing that we can be competitive in that range.

New J/88 Powered By Clean Energy!

J/88 family daysailerHarness the Power of the S.E.A.
(Newport, Rhode Island)-  Imagine sailing a beautiful boat knowing that, even if the wind dies and you’re forced to turn on the engine, peace and tranquility aren’t lost.  Furthermore, imagine that every minute sailing, the battery banks are silently charging, allowing you to later push a button to silently power back to the harbor.

A state-of-the-art electric propulsion and charging system from Oceanvolt is now being offered on the J/88, the 29’ state-of-the-art performance daysailer from J/Boats.

“There’s no quicker buzz kill for sailors than having to turn on the diesel engine,” said Jeff Johnstone, President of J/Boats.  “Most of our owners will tell you they sail their boats 90% of the time.  We’d like to improve that other 10% and make it an environmentally-friendly solution for sailors who love the sea!”

Oceanvolt clean-energy power systemsJ/Boats will be installing Oceanvolt’s innovative, fully integrated S.E.A. system (Silent Electric Autonomy) on their first 2016 model J/88 slated to launch mid-summer in Newport, RI and then displayed at the Newport and Annapolis Shows.  The S.E.A system is electric propulsion with a twist– it has full hydro-regeneration capabilities so that batteries are recharged while sailing, with added passive recharging thanks to 500 watts of high-performance Sunpower solar cells (the world's most efficient).

"For the past ten years, we have been developing innovative solutions for the electric/ hybrid power market in Europe,” said Timo Jaakkola, President of Oceanvolt.  “Based in Finland, a country renowned for developing leading edge ‘green’ solutions, our company has pioneered the use of electric power in keelboats that range from 24 to 55 ft and ranging from 3kW to 20 kW.  We look forward to working with the J/Boats team on their J/88 project!”

Furthermore, be sure to read the Northwest Yachting review of the J/88.  Sailing Editor Bruce Hedrick took the J/88 from Sail Northwest out for a spin in early February on Puget Sound on a gorgeous sunny day— as only the PNW can enjoy in the middle of winter!  Read more about Hedrick’s impressions here.   For more Strictly Sail Pacific sailboat show information
